Cast On, Bind Off: 54 Step-by-Step Methods by Leslie Ann Bestor
What Should You Consider When Choosing a Cast On and Bind Off?
Do you need it to stretch for the bottom of pullover sweater or for a sock cuff?
Elastic edge with loops along the edge, similar to a standard bind off.
You will need a crochet hook and needle.
No need to estimate a tail
A challenge if you are not used to using a crochet hook
Does not involve lifting stitches over others.
Slightly more elastic than standard bind off
Do you need it to be durable for a kid’s sweater or hat?
Strong, stretchy edge with row of decorative beads.
Can be used with garter stitch or K1 P1 rib
Similar to long tail but slower because you need to reset the yarn on your thumb each time.
Cast on 2 stitches at a time
More tails to weave in
Do you need the edge to not curl?
Elastic, firm, non-curling, no flair
Similar to Long Tail Cast On Slingshot method
Good for hats, brioche, sock cuffs
A little more yarn needed than for Long Tail Cast On
Will it be hidden so it doesn’t matter what it looks like?
Will it be seen so you want it to be pretty and stand out?
Should the cast on and bind off look the same?
